“Mystery is at the heart of creativity. That, and surprise.”

As a director, the importance of “doing the work” during pre-production was drilled into my head by my mentor, Joan Darling. “The devil is in the details,” she would always say. Digging in and doing extensive script analysis allows me to step on set, put down my notes and open myself up to the magic that happens.
Luckily, I learned this strategy early in my career so when I was sent to Malaysia to direct a customer reference film for IBM, I had done my homework and was ready for the magic. The day before the shoot I went for a walk that turned into an impromptu location scout when I stumbled upon an abandoned building. MAGIC.
The juxtaposition of the graffiti covered bricks with skyscrapers in the background was the perfect metaphor for this story. A bank struggling with broken systems and siloed data, now modernizing their infrastructure with IBM PureData.
With this new solution, I wanted to capture the feeling of peace and serenity in a fast-paced, chaotic world. I chose to shoot plate shots of noisy traffic and then speed it up in post, while compositing in the still subject. These techniques, coupled with sweeping slow motion shots, created the desired emotional effect.
